Make your fundraiser a success

Whether you’re doing something small or taking on a bigger challenge, these tips will help you plan, promote and enjoy your fundraiser.

Choose your idea

  • Pick something you enjoy as it’s easier to talk about
  • Keep it realistic for your time and energy
  • Think about who you’ll ask to support you

If you’re horsey, involving your yard or riding friends can make fundraising feel more natural.

If you’re still deciding what to do, visit Fundraise your way for inspiration and ideas.

Start with a clear plan

You don’t need anything complicated. A simple plan will help you stay on track.

  • What are you doing, and when?
  • Who are you asking to support you?
  • How will people donate?

If your fundraiser involves horses, think about what’s realistic for you and your horse.

Set a fundraising target

Setting a target gives people something to aim for.

  • Choose a target that feels achievable
  • You can always increase it later
  • People are more likely to donate when they can see your progress

Tell people why it matters to you

People give because of the connection, not just the activity.

  • Share why you care about horses and British Horse Society
  • Keep it personal and honest
  • You don’t need lots of detail – a few lines is enough

Make it easy to donate

The easier it is to give, the more likely people are to donate.

  • Set up a JustGiving page so people can donate in a few clicks
  • Share the link by email, WhatsApp or social media
  • Tell people about it when you see them in person
  • Online fundraising also helps keep money safe

You can still collect cash if you want, just make sure it’s stored securely.

Share little and often

You don’t need to post every day, but a few updates really help.

  • Share when you first set up your fundraiser
  • Post a progress update or milestone
  • Remind people as you get closer to your goal
  • Thank supporters and let them know how it went

Add something extra (if it feels right)

Small extras can help boost donations.

  • Combine your activity with a bake sale or raffle
  • Ask a local business to donate a prize
  • See if your employer offers matched giving

Only do what feels manageable for you.

Look after yourself (and your horse)

  • Choose activities that suit your experience
  • Don’t feel pressure to do something extreme
  • Put safety first for you, others and any horses involved
