How to get started

Fundraising for a cause you care about can be really rewarding, but getting started can feel like the hardest part. These simple steps are here to help you get going.

  1. Choose your idea or challenge
Pick something that suits you and feels enjoyable – it could be horse-related, social, sporty or something simple at home or work.
  2. Set up a JustGiving page
Create an online fundraising page so people can donate easily and safely.
  3. Share your page
Tell friends, family, colleagues or your yard what you’re doing and why it matters to you. Sharing updates as you go really helps.
  4. Take part and say thank you
Complete your fundraiser, thank everyone who supported you, and feel proud of the difference you’ve made.

Fundraising ideas to suit you

You might fundraise on your own, with friends at your yard, with colleagues at work, or as part of a school or community group. What matters most is choosing something you enjoy and feel confident doing.

With your horse or yard

  • A sponsored hack or mileage challenge
  • A yard open day, clear round or friendly competition
  • A fun gymkhana or games day, with small entry fees or donations
  • A fancy dress ride or class, with prizes for best costume
  • A bake sale or coffee morning at your yard to support a sponsored ride
  • A tack sale or horsey jumble

You can combine activities too – for example, ask people to sponsor your ride, then invite them along for cake or refreshments afterwards.

Any activity involving horses should always be suitable for your experience and your horse’s wellbeing.

With friends and family

  • A bake sale, coffee morning or afternoon tea
  • A quiz night, speed puzzling, bingo or games evening
  • A sponsored walk, swim, run or cycle
  • A car wash or spring clean at your stable yard
  • Swapping a night out for a night in and donating what you save

At work or school

  • A bake sale or dress-down day
  • A sports day or team challenge
  • Giving up a bad habit for a month
  • Asking your employer about matched giving
  • A raffle or sweepstake (make sure you follow the rules)

Take on a personal challenge

If you enjoy setting yourself a goal, you could:

  • Run a 5k, 10k or marathon
  • Cycle a long distance
  • Walk, hike or climb a mountain
  • Swim a personal distance challenge
  • Take part in a BHS challenge event

If you’re taking part in an event organised by someone else, you can still fundraise for us by setting up a JustGiving page.

Plan a group fundraiser

For riding schools, clubs, yards, workplaces or community groups who want to organise something a bit bigger, or involve several people fundraising together, see our plan a group fundraiser page.

Celebrate or remember someone special

Fundraising can also mark an important moment.

  • Ask for donations instead of gifts for a birthday or celebration
  • Fundraise in memory of a loved one
